Education is the lever that enables all people to achieve economic independence, fully participate in democracy, and pursue happiness as they define it.

The Fulcrum is the part of a lever that determines if it has the power to move things and make an impact. An organization’s fulcrum could be a key decision, a key analysis or insight, or forging a key relationship. I work with clients to help them find their fulcrum, leveraging my expertise across many sectors, ability to connect the dots, curiosity, and empathy.

Where Fulcrum Works

Sectors and Geographies: K-12, postsecondary, workforce, and adjacent social justice initiatives. Fulcrum works in the U.S. and with global organizations.

Types of Clients: Nonprofit programs and intermediaries, philanthropies, K-12 schools, institutions of higher education, and mission-driven for-profits.

How Fulcrum Works

Projects are customized to each client’s needs, culture, and timeline. Projects can range from week-long design sprints to year-long engagements. Projects can include direct execution from start to finish, lighter-touch facilitation of teams, and/or training to build staff capacity.

Projects can be with an individual organization or with a community of practice taking a collective journey.

Strategic Planning

Strategic planning is about deciding what an organization will and will not do to maximize impact, and then communicating those decisions in a clear, compelling external pitchbook and an internal playbook to ensure they are effectively implemented. I work with clients to clarify the decisions they want to make, identify what internal and external data will inform those decisions, determine which voices need to be heard and in what role, facilitate those dialogues, and capture the story of those decisions in a strategy. Finally, I work closely with organizations to develop implementation plans to ensure their strategy becomes a reality.

Strategic planning can include making decisions about how to:

  • Grow or protect Scale (who they serve and how many), Success (the impact they are having), and/or Sustainability (both financial and organizational).
  • Utilize any combination of Direct Impact, Widespread Impact, and Systemic Impact.
  • Strengthen an organization’s ability to compete in existing or new markets, including how to position itself relative to peers and competitors, understand its true costs, and use that to set pricing.

“Working with Alex on strategic planning transformed the way the CARA team approaches our work. Alex has a deep understanding of what it means to create impact both on the ground and at the level of systems. He is skilled at guiding organizations and leaders through planning. He took the time to listen and learn about what CARA does and what we care about and provided ways to break complex choices down to a level we could act on. We were also fortunate to participate in a six-month community of practice on Systemic Impact where Alex expertly led a cohort of leaders to figure out what changes we wanted to make to systems, and then how do go about doing it. We often find ourselves quoting Alex when both reflecting on our work internally and talking about it with external audiences.”

– Lori Chajet, Co-Executive Director, College Access: Research and Action (CARA)

“Alex has been a long-time partner to Saga and our team. His Direct, Widespread, and Systemic Impact framework has shaped our growth and how we articulate our value proposition to schools, districts, states, and funders. It has become the common language in our field. Alex is an exceptional thinker and communicator who is smart, wise, and kind.”

The Purpose of This Website

This website will be a space where I can share new tools, learnings, and insights. I don’t have a “grand unified theory of everything” when it comes to social impact, but I do have a “partially connected theory of a lot of things” that I want to make available for leaders and their teams. . Please feel free to use the content in your organization’s work, and don’t hesitate to reach out with feedback or ideas. I take requests.

My Background

Painted portrait of Alex Cortez

Experience: Prior to Fulcrum Advising, I spent five years as a partner at Bellwether, leading over 30 client projects that spanned K-12 schools, workforce development, postsecondary advising, institutions of higher education, philanthropies, policy and advocacy organizations, place-based education intermediaries, and after-school program providers. Before Bellwether, I was a managing partner with New Profit, where I originated a fund focused on parent power and systems change that included grantmaking, communities of practice, and research and publishing. I served as a regional director of growth and sustainability at the KIPP Foundation and as chief of staff, strategy, and execution with KIPP Houston Public Schools (commuting from Boston). I began my career in for-profit consulting and later moved to nonprofit consulting as a manager with The Bridgespan Group.

Board Service: Since 2018, I have served my community as a member of the Massachusetts State Board of Higher Education, where I have led efforts to report on measures of economic mobility to drive evidence-based policymaking. I am also on the board of Saga Education, a national provider of high-dosage tutoring. I have previously served on the boards of Valor Collegiate Academies, 4.0 Schools, Innovate Public Schools, Match Education, Discovering Justice, and Community Action Partners.

Education: I earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Columbia University and an MPA and an MBA with honors from Harvard University. I am an alum of the Pahara Institute.

Personal: Raised in New Orleans, I live in the Boston area with my wife, stepdaughter, and a rescue guinea pig named Mr. Bubble. I love any form of human expression and storytelling. I appreciate the outdoors when it has access to indoor plumbing. I only run when chased.
